Goodbye Namibia…

Before heading back to Windhoek to return our vehicle, we visited Waterberg Plateau National Park, and had a very nice hike there up the mountain. Great spot for a day visit!

Since we still had a few nights left, as a pit stop on the way to Windhoek we decided to stay at Otjiwarongo at a lovely Bush Pillow Guest house (the owner owns property from Finland at Punkalaidun, what a small world!), and went to see some cheetas at the AfriCat Foundation. This NGO does an extremely important job safeguarding cheetas and leopards of the area from getting shot by local farmers, and educate the young, soon-to-be farmers on how to co-exist with these animals and avoid making lethal, traditional traps that have endangered the species in that area. A beautiful creature, cheetah, the fastest of all the big cats.

We experienced a night of horrors near Waterberg with these things flying endlessly around and finding their way into our tent :S

Exploring Namibia during these almost four weeks has been quite an adventure, and it really feels like we’ve gotten to know the country in all its glory: the endless miles on sandy gravel roads, the peace and quiet of the desert, the amazing variety of wildlife as well as the joys of campsites and camping. And the people we’ve encountered, were they Namibians or other travelers, it’s been great joy to get to meet them, to share a part of our trip with them and enjoy good conversations by the bond fire (special thanks to Anne and Chloe!). In our everyday lives we are often caught up by the same routines, hobbies and work, so it has been deliberating to meet new people and hear their life and travel stories. It’s quite amazing how you share the same view on life with many who you meet during your travels. And we must conclude, it was the best ever decision to book that Airbnb with Sandra and Riaan, who made our first as well as last nights in Namibia feel like we’re back home – thanks so much for the great talks, sharing skydiving stories, Namibian food tasting and pancakes, as well as the final adventure with the Sri Lankan rupees, the airport and the flight just minutes away from departing. Sandra, we thank you for your rally-like driving skills ;)

With these words it’s time to turn the next page of our two-month adventure and head to Asia – Sri Lanka, here we come!
